Luzi Hitz – Chief Executive Officer of PERILS
Luzi Hitz is the Chief Executive Officer of PERILS, bringing over 20 years of experience in the reinsurance industry. His career spans leadership roles in risk management and underwriting at Swiss Re, Glacier Re, and Asia Capital Re. He is known for his work in natural catastrophe risk management and has authored numerous articles and delivered industry-focused speeches on the subject.
Hitz holds a Master’s degree in Geology and a PhD in Geophysics. Before entering the reinsurance sector, he worked in the mining and oil industries. He began his reinsurance career in 1995 as part of Swiss Re’s Earthquake Risk Group. By 2001, he relocated to Hong Kong to lead the Catastrophe Risk Management unit for Swiss Re’s Asia-Pacific division, which was experiencing rapid growth. His leadership role expanded in 2004 when he became Head of Property & Casualty Treaty Underwriting for the Greater China region.
In 2006, Hitz returned to Switzerland to join Glacier Group, where he managed the company’s international Property & Casualty treaty portfolio. His expertise includes catastrophe risk management, reinsurance underwriting, business planning, start-ups, people management, and public relations.
At PERILS, Hitz played a key role in building the company’s team and shaping its strategic direction. Initially, PERILS focused on providing industry-wide exposure and loss data for European wind risks (winter storms). Under his leadership, the organization has expanded its coverage to include other perils and regions, making it a vital resource for insurers, reinsurers, and risk managers.
