The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) is investigating a cybersecurity breach involving its student financial aid website that may have exposed personal information belonging to approximately 4.9 mn individuals.
The department discovered the incident on October 19, 2026, and activated its cybersecurity response procedures to stop unauthorized activity and secure affected systems.
- A cybersecurity breach at the Florida Department of Education potentially exposed personal information belonging to approximately 4.9 mn individuals.
- Compromised records may include Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth, addresses and contact details.
- Florida officials are investigating the incident, while the department says financial aid payments, scholarships and student loan eligibility will remain unaffected.
According to the department’s official notification, the breach is believed to be limited to the Florida Student Financial Aid website. Investigators are still determining the extent of the unauthorized access and whether personal records were extracted.
People who previously applied for financial aid in Florida may be among those affected.
Florida data breach exposes Social Security numbers and personal information
The potentially compromised information includes Social Security numbers, names, dates of birth, residential addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses and gender identification codes.
FLDOE cautioned that not all 4.9 mn individuals were necessarily affected and that the information exposed may vary between records.
The department has not disclosed how attackers accessed the website or identified the individuals responsible. It has also not confirmed whether all potentially compromised records were accessed or copied.
The exposure of Social Security numbers and other identifying information creates potential identity theft and financial fraud risks for affected individuals.
Florida education officials investigate cybersecurity incident
Following the discovery, FLDOE notified the Florida Office of the Attorney General under the state’s data breach notification requirements. The department is coordinating its investigation with the Florida Digital Service and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) is aware of a data breach incident involving unauthorised criminal access to Department information.
“Upon identifying the threat, the Department immediately activated its cybersecurity response protocols and took swift, decisive action to stop the unauthorised activity, contain the incident and secure its systems,” the agency said.
Some department websites and online services may experience temporary disruptions while cybersecurity teams complete remediation work.
FLDOE confirmed that the incident will not interrupt existing financial aid arrangements. Student aid disbursements and tuition payments will continue, and eligibility for scholarships, grants and student loans administered by the department will not change.
The investigation remains ongoing. FLDOE said it would provide further updates as additional findings are verified.
