The Global Asia Insurance Partnership has named Cathay Life Insurance as a Principal Partner. The agreement will bring Taiwan’s largest life insurer into GAIP’s work on protection gaps and emerging risks across Asia.
GAIP brings together insurers, regulators, policymakers and academic institutions. Its existing partners include the Monetary Authority of Singapore, Chinese Taipei Financial Supervisory Commission and World Economic Forum.
Cathay Life was established in 1962 and serves more than 8 mn customers as of June 30, 2026. That represents more than one-third of Taiwan’s population, while the insurer manages more than 20 mn active insurance contracts.
The company operates its main life insurance business in Taiwan. It also has a joint venture in mainland China and a subsidiary in Vietnam, giving it experience across several Asian insurance markets.
GAIP CEO Min Hung Cheng said Cathay Life will contribute its market experience to the partnership’s regional work. The two organizations plan to cooperate on research, industry discussions and practical approaches to narrowing insurance protection gaps.
Cathay Life said it plans to share experience from Taiwan’s life insurance market. Areas of interest include health and retirement protection, climate-related risk and insurance risk management.
The insurer also identified population ageing and emerging technologies among issues requiring cooperation between markets and sectors. Cathay Life said it intends to work with GAIP members on research and practical applications related to these areas.
As a Principal Partner, Cathay Life will participate in GAIP working groups and industry dialogues. It will also receive access to GAIP research, analytical tools and workshops focused on existing and developing risks.
The partnership gives Cathay Life opportunities to contribute to discussions involving insurers, regulators and academic institutions. GAIP said these exchanges are intended to support evidence-based responses to risks affecting households, businesses and economies across Asia.
GAIP and Cathay Life will also work on cross-sector knowledge exchange. Their collaboration will focus on insurance protection, risk research and approaches that can be applied across Asian markets.
Cathay Life Insurance set out to develop the Asian market as a response to the challenges of globalization. The most important target was the budding market in mainland China. After several years of planning and preparation, Cathay Life became the first Taiwanese firm to establish an insurance company in the Mainland when Cathay Life Insurance (China) was officially established in January, 2005.
In December 2007, the company successfully obtained a business license issued by the Ministry of Finance in Vietnam and established Cathay Life Insurance (Vietnam), making it the first domestic company to set up an insurance subsidiary in Vietnam.
Since its inception, Cathay Life has sought to give back to the community, and has spared no effort in organizing public service activities. In fact, shouldering social responsibility has become a principle tenet of the company’s business philosophy. Cathay Life is deeply engaged in arts, sports, and social assistance endeavors.
In addition to sponsoring the Cathay Life women’s basketball team, we have also been sponsoring outdoor performances all across Taiwan by the Cloud Gate Dance Theater since 1996. The company makes annual contributions to charitable organizations, and our employees volunteer their time and donate money whenever natural disasters occur.
