How the shooting unfolded at Citibank’s Tampa office complex
Emergency services responded shortly after noon to the Citigroup business complex in Brandon, near Interstate 75 and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
According to Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat, emergency dispatchers began receiving multiple reports of gunfire at approximately 12:11 p.m.
The first marked law enforcement unit entered the building at 12:12 p.m., according to the timeline Losat presented during a news conference.
Investigators said the suspect arrived in a four-door sedan, drove over medians and breached a secured perimeter fence before crashing into an outdoor seating area occupied by employees during their lunch break.
After the vehicle stopped, the attacker emerged carrying a rifle. Upon the car coming to rest, the suspect exits the vehicle with a rifle, approaches the female, and she is shot.
The woman died from her injuries. Authorities had not publicly identified her, pending confirmation of her identity and notification of her next of kin.
The suspect’s identity was also being withheld while investigators completed their identification procedures.
Armed Citibank security guard fatally shoots suspect
At approximately 12:15 p.m., an armed security guard employed by Citibank confronted the suspect inside the cafeteria.
Authorities said the two exchanged gunfire before the guard shot the attacker. The suspect was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was declared dead.
Losat credited the security officer with preventing the incident from escalating and potentially causing further casualties.
The chief deputy said authorities were continuing to establish the exact sequence of events and the circumstances surrounding the attack.
More than 3,200 Citi employees were at the complex
Approximately 3,200 Citigroup employees were on the property when the shooting occurred, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
The emergency prompted a large-scale response involving 367 sheriff’s office personnel, heavily armed deputies and armored vehicles.
Authorities conducted an extensive security sweep across the office complex, searching individual rooms and other areas to ensure that no additional threats remained. The process took approximately two and a half hours. “Every inch of that building, every locked room was searched and secured,” Losat said.
Law enforcement officials subsequently confirmed that the buildings had been cleared.
A law enforcement source told ABC News that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were also expected to respond to the incident.
Investigators described the crime scene as extensive and said evidence collection could continue into Thursday.
Citi employees describe panic and evacuation
Witnesses described employees fleeing the complex as emergency personnel arrived.
Spectrum Bay News 9 reporter Fallon Silcox spoke with a visibly shaken woman who described people running from the scene. Several ambulances were seen arriving shortly after 1:30 p.m.
Reporter Josh Rojas said hundreds of employees were leaving the office buildings when he reached the campus. Concerned family members were also attempting to enter the property to check on relatives working inside.
The husband of one employee told reporters that his wife had been in a cafeteria bathroom when the shooting began nearby.
Authorities established a reunification center where evacuated employees could reconnect with family members.
The shooting and subsequent security operation caused widespread disruption at the office complex as law enforcement personnel searched the buildings and interviewed witnesses.
Investigators examine whether the shooting was targeted
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including the attacker’s possible motive and whether he had any previous connection to the victim.
Chronister initially characterized the incident as targeted in a social media statement issued on Wednesday.
Losat subsequently cautioned that investigators were still establishing the facts and that preliminary information could change as the investigation progressed.
Sources told ABC News that authorities were examining whether the suspect may have had a financial grievance and whether any such grievance was connected to Citibank. That possible motive had not been confirmed by law enforcement.
Investigators were also working to determine whether the suspect and the woman he killed knew each other.
With approximately 3,200 employees present during the incident, authorities anticipated conducting witness interviews throughout Wednesday night and into Thursday.
The sheriff’s office asked anyone with relevant information, including photographs or video recordings, to contact investigators.
