MetLife has strengthened its position in Ukraine’s life insurance market, increasing its market share to nearly 50% by the end of 2025, supported by premium growth, business diversification and rising demand for financial protection during the war.
The insurer collected UAH 3 bn in gross written premiums in 2025, while assets under management exceeded UAH 12 bn, according to Forinsurer. Annual investment income reached a record UAH 1.2 bn.

According to Inna Bielianska, Chair of the Management Board of MetLife Ukraine, the company’s growth reflected the development of risk insurance, adjustments to product affordability and continued investment in traditional savings-oriented life insurance.
The insurer expanded its portfolio of accident and critical illness products to address changing customer needs as inflation constrained household finances and reduced long-term planning horizons.
At the same time, MetLife maintained its existing savings life insurance portfolio and long-term obligations to policyholders.
MetLife insurance payouts and new business in 2026
During the first nine months of 2026, MetLife paid UAH 260.34 mn across 15,422 insurance claims, including 55 war-related claims totaling UAH 2.1 mn.
The insurer separately reported 2,010 maturity benefit payments and 532 annuity payments under savings life insurance contracts. Customers received UAH 262.72 mn across these two categories.
MetLife also paid UAH 64.16 mn in surrender values on 2,603 insurance policies terminated before maturity.
Between January and September 2026, the company issued 25,517 new insurance policies, handled 31,597 telephone calls and processed 16,044 customer inquiries. For comparison, MetLife made more than 2,700 maturity and annuity payments totaling over UAH 249 mn during 2025.
MetLife maintains war-related insurance protection
Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, MetLife introduced special arrangements for civilian policyholders affected by hostilities.
Although traditional life insurance contracts generally exclude war-related risks, the insurer began reviewing qualifying cases individually and making payments as exceptions to standard policy conditions.
Over more than four years of full-scale war, MetLife has made approximately 2,670 exceptional payments totaling more than UAH 62.5 mn.
The company also extended the grace period for insurance premium payments from 30 to 90 days in spring 2022. The arrangement remains in effect, allowing customers experiencing financial difficulties to defer payments without immediately losing coverage.
MetLife has maintained a conservative investment strategy, prioritizing liquid, short-term instruments, including deposits of up to three months with state-owned banks and subsidiaries of international banking groups.
This approach is intended to preserve liquidity for insurance claims while supporting obligations under life insurance contracts that can remain in force for decades.
The company also maintained its workforce of approximately 130 employees and supported a nationwide distribution network of around 12,000 financial advisers through remote working tools, online training and digital customer services.
MetLife’s expansion to nearly half of Ukraine’s life insurance market highlights the increasing concentration of the sector and the importance of established insurers in providing long-term financial protection despite continued wartime disruption.
