Wawanesa Mutual Insurance launches WSI after completing acquisition of Everest Canada
  • Wawanesa has launched WSI, A Wawanesa Company, following the completed acquisition of Everest Insurance Company of Canada from Everest Group.
  • WSI retains Everest Canada’s underwriting expertise, specialty insurance portfolio, distribution relationships and existing service arrangements.
  • Wawanesa brings $12.5 bn in assets, a 130-year operating history and an AM Best rating of A (Excellent) to support WSI’s growth.

The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company has launched WSI, A Wawanesa Company, following the completion of its acquisition of Everest Insurance Company of Canada from Everest Group, Ltd. The new business began operating under the WSI brand on October 1, 2026, establishing a distinct specialty insurance operation within the Wawanesa group.

WSI retains Everest Canada’s established underwriting expertise, specialist teams and operating model. The business will continue serving Canadian organisations through its existing distribution network, with Wawanesa providing financial backing and long-term support.

The acquisition brings Everest Canada’s specialty insurance capabilities under the ownership of one of Canada’s largest mutual insurers, combining an established specialty underwriting business with Wawanesa’s financial resources.

WSI maintains Everest Canada’s specialty insurance portfolio

WSI will continue providing specialty insurance solutions across cyber, accident and health, aviation, marine, energy, construction, directors and officers liability, professional liability, property and casualty.

The company will work with its distribution partners to develop coverage tailored to clients’ specific risk exposures, maintaining the underwriting practices and business relationships established under Everest Canada.

Evan Johnston, President and CEO of Wawanesa, said the acquisition provides an opportunity to expand the specialty insurance business while preserving its existing strengths.

“The introduction of WSI marks an important moment in the Canadian specialty market,” Johnston said. “We saw a company with remarkable characteristics and an impressive track record. We’re excited to build on that success and help WSI in creating something even greater for organizations across our country and the communities they serve.”

Wawanesa retains existing distribution and underwriting arrangements

The transition to WSI will not result in immediate changes for clients or distribution partners. Existing contacts, operational processes, underwriting approaches and service agreements will remain in place.

Although the company has adopted a new name and corporate identity, its underlying business model and established relationships will continue without disruption.

WSI will operate as a separate organisation within the Wawanesa group, retaining the technical expertise and underwriting discipline developed by Everest Canada.

Wawanesa said the ownership structure combines the operational flexibility and specialist capabilities of a specialty insurer with the financial strength and long-term outlook of a large Canadian mutual insurance company.

The parent insurer has a 130-year operating history, $12.5 bn in assets and an AM Best rating of A (Excellent). These resources will provide financial support for WSI’s continued development and growth in the Canadian specialty insurance market.

The company intends to build on Everest Canada’s existing market position while maintaining the distribution partnerships, underwriting standards and service arrangements that supported its operations before the acquisition.
