Nicholai Benalal – European Central Bank, Frankfurt am Main, Germany
Nicholai Benalal is a Senior Lead Economist at the European Central Bank (ECB), based in the Frankfurt-Rhine-Main metropolitan region. With over two decades of experience at the ECB, Nicholai has held progressively senior roles since joining the institution in 2002.
From 2002 to 2013, he served as an Economist and then as a Senior Economist in the EU Countries division, focusing on economic analysis, country monitoring, forecasting, and advanced econometric analysis. Between 2013 and 2022, Nicholai was a Principal Economist, where his work included acting as the ECB Deputy Mission Chief for the Greek adjustment program (2013-2015). He also coordinated a significant report on structural reforms in the EU for the ECB Governing Council. Since January 2022, he has served as Senior Lead Economist, continuing to influence policy through high-level economic research and analysis.
Nicholai holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics (1996-2001) and a high school diploma in Physical Sciences from École Française in Stockholm (1991-1994).
