Mosaic Insurance launches AI underwriting platform Halo for SME risks

Mosaic Insurance has launched Halo, a digital underwriting platform built to bring complex specialty insurance products to small and mid-size enterprises more quickly.

The Bermuda specialty insurer said Halo uses artificial intelligence to combine broker trading activity, underwriting decisions and portfolio performance within one operating system.

Mitch Blaser, Mosaic co-founder and co-CEO, described the launch as a major change in the insurer’s capabilities, distribution reach and use of AI.

Mosaic designed Halo as modular infrastructure for SME insurance rather than as a quoting system tied to one product. The structure gives the insurer a common technology base for launching and modifying products, entering new territories and changing distribution arrangements without rebuilding the underlying system each time.

Halo reflects our broader AI strategy: using technology to augment underwriting, leverage data and enable our teams to deploy their expertise more efficiently and at greater scale.

Liam Jones, CEO of Mosaic’s agency business, said the platform provides infrastructure for developing and scaling specialty products through digital distribution.

“True digital trading, genuine augmentation of information, and real-time active portfolio management is the progress we’ve all been seeking for many years,” Jones said.

Brokers are able to submit business through email, API connections or Halo’s portal. The choice of channels is intended to fit existing broker workflows rather than require business to move through a single submission route.

Once a submission enters Halo, the system structures, enriches and organizes the information for underwriting. Mosaic said the process reduces follow-up requests and repeated broker interactions before a risk reaches an underwriter.

Eligible submissions move through automated quoting, binding and policy issuance within minutes. Exceptions and more complex risks are routed to dedicated underwriters for review.

The platform also gives Mosaic a view across its full submission funnel. Data includes submission patterns, conversion rates, risk quality, pricing, limits, retentions, coverage and distribution.

George Cole, Mosaic’s head of SME cyber, said Halo also gives underwriters greater visibility into concentration risk as portfolios develop.

Halo gives us a clear view of the portfolio as it develops and helps identify where exposure may be accumulating across industries, technologies, service providers and other exposure units.

Cyber is the first product launched through Halo and is currently available through wholesale broker partners in North America.

Cole said portfolio visibility is particularly relevant for cyber insurance because one vulnerability or incident might affect multiple policyholders at the same time.

The same approach will apply as Mosaic adds other specialty products where insurers need to track aggregation and concentration across portfolios.

Halo therefore combines automated SME distribution with human underwriting for risks outside automated parameters. Mosaic plans to use the same infrastructure across additional specialty products, territories and distribution relationships.
