Tokyo-based MS&AD Insurance Group Holdings announced a $100 mn increase to its venture capital fund, bringing the total to $400 mn. The fund focuses on startups and innovative business models, including insurtech.
MS&AD aims to create value for stakeholders through innovation and addressing social challenges. MS&AD noted strong growth among portfolio companies and expanding investment opportunities as key reasons for increasing the fund size.
Previously, the group raised its venture fund by $100 mn to $300 mn, citing steady growth opportunities at the time.
MS&AD Ventures, a wholly-owned subsidiary based in Menlo Park, California, targets early-stage startups with potential to generate returns and support MS&AD’s business growth.
The focus areas include insurtech, fintech, life/health, sustainability, mobility, AI, and related fields.
The fund had invested in 112 companies. MS&AD Ventures, established in October 2018, was the first venture firm by a Japanese insurer. Its investments aim to enhance insurance profitability, explore new markets, and build businesses through startup collaborations.
Through global investments, MS&AD seeks to drive cross-group initiatives, develop new products, and foster business creation with portfolio startups.
