Prudential Hong Kong launches AI underwriting tool with Alibaba Cloud

Prudential Hong Kong has fully launched an AI-powered underwriting tool developed with Alibaba Cloud, giving financial consultants preliminary underwriting guidance within minutes and reducing the time required to assess insurance applications.

AI Underwriter uses a chatbot to provide preliminary indications based on a customer’s financial, medical, occupational and residential information.

The system indicates whether an application is likely to be accepted, require exclusions or premium loadings, or need additional information before proceeding.

Prudential said financial consultants receive an earlier view of potential underwriting requirements before submitting an application. Consultants can collect more complete information from customers upfront, reducing subsequent requests for documents or clarification.

Previously, a preliminary assessment could take several days before consultants learned which additional information was required, according to the insurer.

AI Underwriter marks an important step forward in how Prudential works with leading ecosystem partners to bring practical innovation into the insurance journey.

The system combines Prudential’s underwriting expertise with Alibaba Cloud’s AI infrastructure and models. It uses Alibaba’s Qwen models through Model Studio together with a retrieval-augmented generation engine for data retrieval, intent recognition and evidence grounding.

Prudential reported accuracy above 95% and hallucination rates below 2%. The tool was developed and deployed in less than three months through Alibaba Cloud’s Forward-Deployment Engineering service model. The approach places engineers and AI agents within Prudential’s business and engineering workflows.

Ethan Yuan, vice president of international business and regional general manager of APAC North at Alibaba Cloud Intelligence, said the project showed how AI applications are moving from pilot programs into core insurance operations.

AI Underwriter represents the first phase of Prudential’s broader underwriting AI program. The insurer plans to extend the system to other distribution channels, including bancassurance and brokerage, and provide access to its underwriting team.

Prudential also intends to expand the tool’s knowledge base with historical underwriting decisions and reinsurers’ underwriting guidelines. The additional information would give the system access to a wider body of underwriting experience.

Human underwriters will continue making final decisions. Prudential said AI Underwriter provides preliminary guidance, while applications still require review by its underwriting team after all relevant information has been received.

The launch comes as insurers across Asia increase their use of AI in underwriting, policy servicing and customer operations while retaining human review for decisions affecting coverage and pricing.
