Zendesk commits $100 mn to startup AI customer support program

Zendesk has announced a $100 mn, two-year commitment to help startups build customer experience systems earlier. The company introduced the expanded Zendesk for Startups program at its annual Relate conference.

The program gives founders access to Zendesk products at no cost. It also includes resources and partner benefits designed to help startups automate customer support and scale faster.

For the first time, Zendesk is extending dedicated benefits to venture capital partners across their portfolios. The company said the program is built for early-stage companies that need customer infrastructure before large support teams exist.

Zendesk CTO Adrian McDermott said early decisions about customer infrastructure shape what comes next for founders. He said AI now changes what small teams can accomplish from day one.

McDermott said startups should not have to choose between speed and building the right systems. By removing cost as a barrier, Zendesk wants founders to preserve runway while using AI early.

“The decisions founders make early about their customer infrastructure shape everything that comes after,” said Adrian McDermott. “I joined Zendesk when we were a small startup, and those early decisions shaped everything that followed. We built this program with that experience in mind.

AI has fundamentally changed what a small team can accomplish from day one – founders shouldn’t have to choose between moving fast and building right. With AI built in from the start, they can do both while extending their runway by removing cost as a barrier.

More than 50,000 startups globally have scaled on Zendesk. The company cited ElevenLabs and Canva among fast-growing businesses that have used its platform.

The program supports founders through Series B. It applies to companies with up to 250 employees.

Members receive up to two years of access to Zendesk’s full AI suite at no cost. Zendesk said this is the longest no-cost commitment currently available among customer experience startup offers.

Startups also receive more seats and higher monthly resolution limits than comparable programs. They gain access to a digital membership hub and partner benefits from AWS, GitHub, Notion, and other companies.

Qualified startups receive access to Zendesk at no cost for up to two years. The offer is intended to help companies preserve capital while building customer operations.

The package includes AI Agents Advanced, which lets startups automate support before headcount becomes a constraint. It also includes VIP onboarding and implementation support to help teams launch quickly.

Founders receive dedicated sales support as they scale. Zendesk is also offering exclusive events, founder sessions, and partner programming.

The program includes direct access to Zendesk Labs, Zendesk Ventures, and Zendesk executives. That access is meant to support feedback, product input, and strategic guidance.

Lauren Burke Silva, co-founder and CEO of MERIT, said government bid workflows are often inefficient. She said Zendesk helps MERIT automate workflows and deploy AI agents from day one.

“The process of organizing people and resources for government bids is notoriously inefficient, and the best teams often lose because of it,” said Lauren Burke Silva, Co-Founder and CEO, MERIT. “We built MERIT to streamline that pursuit process. By choosing Zendesk, we’re able to automate workflows and deploy AI agents from day one – allowing us to stay lean and focused on our mission to help our customers win.”

Zendesk is also expanding benefits for venture capital firms. Partners include a16z, Techstars, Lvlup Ventures, 500 Global, and others.

VC partners will receive access to closed-door interactive AI sessions, quarterly portfolio reviews, Zendesk Employee Service, and direct access to Zendesk executives through the Executive Sponsor program.

Techstars founder and CEO David Cohen said strong founders move quickly and build with conviction. He said Zendesk is meeting them with practical resources and a commitment to the startup ecosystem.
