Athena Re, a London-based specialist insurance and reinsurance MGA, has received approval to operate as a Lloyd’s coverholder, the company said.

The MGA plans to establish a flagship cyber insurance binder supported by Lloyd’s capacity, with additional insurance product lines expected to follow in the coming months.

Athena Re focuses primarily on providing reinsurance solutions across Africa, while also serving selected markets in the Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Latin America, according to information published on its website.

Chrispin Onyancha, chief executive officer of Athena Re, said the company was founded on the principle that “the markets experiencing some of the strongest economic growth should have better access to high-quality insurance capacity and specialist underwriting expertise.”

The MGA’s underwriting specializations include financial lines, with products covering cyber insurance for small and medium-sized enterprises, commercial crime, and directors and officers (D&O) liability insurance.

Its specialty insurance portfolio extends to political violence, credit and surety risks, and gaming-related insurance solutions.

Athena Re also provides coverage across its core insurance lines, including property and engineering, marine and aviation, and the energy sector.

In reinsurance, the company offers treaty and retrocession solutions, supporting its broader focus on specialist underwriting and insurance capacity across its target markets.
