Insurtech Feather launches digital car insurance for expats in Spain, France, Germany

Berlin-based insurtech Feather – known for its digital-first insurance solutions tailored to expatriates – has rolled out its new Car Insurance product, designed for expats across Europe who often face red tape and language hurdles when securing coverage.

Customers can complete the process online in English in under three minutes, receiving instant proof of coverage.

The product launches first in Spain, France, and Germany—three of the continent’s largest auto markets. Feather partnered with Allianz, Helvetia, and VHV to support the rollout, enabling policyholders to sign up, manage, and update coverage fully online.

The company says the streamlined digital journey cuts out bureaucracy that usually complicates car insurance purchases for foreigners.

CEO and co-founder Rob Schumacher said car insurance remains one of the toughest challenges for expats relocating to Europe.

In just three minutes, anyone can get reliable coverage in their own language, backed by trusted partners.

He added that while auto coverage is mandatory and vast in size, traditional players have failed to meet rising consumer expectations for speed and clarity.

The move comes amid steady growth in Europe’s motor insurance market. Statista projects the sector will reach €175.69bn in 2025, with per capita spending over €208.

By 2029, the figure could top €183bn. Long-term forecasts suggest the market may approach $490bn by 2034, driven by car sales, pricing shifts, and demand for digital-first services.

Feather argues that expat-first platforms can address complexity in language and local regulation while delivering transparency.

Schumacher called the launch a “natural next step” in the firm’s mission to rebuild insurance for a modern audience, positioning Feather as the go-to provider for foreigners living in Europe.

It appointed new leadership in those markets, developed new products—such as business and motor insurance—and rolled out fully digital solutions that have resonated rapidly, especially among expat users.

The startup has been scaling rapidly. In 2024, it raised $6mn to accelerate expansion and named Eloi Lanthiez and Jaime Sans Alvarez to lead its French and Spanish operations.

New round brought Feather’s total funding to €10 mn, suggesting earlier capital (from a seed round around 2021) had already been raised or bootstrapped.

That funding round, led by Keen Venture Partners with participation from Plural as well as senior leaders from Allianz, AXA, and Bastian, enabled Feather to scale rapidly across Europe and build out its pan‑European platform.

Founded in Germany, Feather already offers health, liability, and business insurance tailored for expatriates. Car insurance now joins the lineup as the latest product built around the needs of international residents.

Beyond auto coverage, the digital insurance sector across Europe is gaining traction. Valued at $128 bn in 2024, it is forecast to grow 33.5% annually through 2030.

Nearly half of consumers now see digital channels as the standard way to purchase policies, and more than 80% expect insurance to be embedded directly within apps and services they use every day.

With its expansion into car insurance, Feather aims to simplify one of the most complex industries and reshape how expats experience coverage in their adopted countries.
