Nettle raises $4.8 mn to expand AI-powered insurance loss control
  • Nettle has raised $4.8 mn in an oversubscribed seed round led by MTech, bringing total funding to $6.8 mn following a $2 mn pre-seed investment in March 2025.
  • Its AI-powered loss control platform helps commercial insurers complete risk inspections 5x faster, addressing engineering shortages and inspection backlogs of up to six months.
  • Already working with Allianz and Brotherhood Mutual across Europe, the US and Asia, Nettle plans to expand its teams and extend AI-enabled risk assessments to agents and policyholders.

Nettle, an AI-powered loss control platform for commercial insurers, has secured $4.8 mn in an oversubscribed seed funding round led by MTech, with participation from Project A, Sure Valley Ventures (SVV), Portfolio Ventures and Ventures Together.

The investment brings the company’s total funding to $6.8 mn, following a $2 mn pre-seed round completed in March 2025. Nettle plans to use the proceeds to expand its operations across the US and Europe while increasing investment in engineering and go-to-market teams.

Founded in 2024, Nettle develops AI technology designed to help commercial insurers identify, assess and manage physical risks more efficiently. Its platform combines risk identification, evidence collection, analysis and reporting in a single workspace, allowing insurers to complete risk inspections five times faster, according to the company.

The technology addresses capacity constraints affecting commercial insurance loss control operations. Insurers face increasing demand for risk assessments as the availability of experienced risk engineers declines.

Inspection backlogs already extend to six months in some teams, while an estimated 40% of risk engineers are expected to retire by 2030.

Nettle aims to reduce the dependence of loss control operations on the number of specialist engineers available. Its AI workspace allows insurers to assess a larger proportion of their portfolios while directing experienced professionals toward more complex exposures requiring specialist judgment.

The platform is already used by insurers including Allianz and Brotherhood Mutual, with deployments across Europe, the US and Asia.

Initially developed for commercial property insurance, Nettle has expanded its capabilities to other commercial lines, including liability, construction and workers’ compensation.

The company is also extending its inspection technology beyond risk engineers to insurance agents and policyholders. This approach allows insurers to gather risk information from properties and facilities where conventional engineering inspections would previously have been too expensive to justify.

Nettle’s platform uses AI and external data sources to identify potential exposures before an engineer visits a location. Guided inspection workflows then allow engineers, agents and policyholders to collect consistent information about physical risks.

The system analyzes photographs, video recordings, audio, documents and third-party data to produce assessments. Reports, risk scores and recommendations that previously required days of manual work can be generated in seconds, according to Nettle.

The resulting information is intended to give underwriters more timely and higher-quality risk data while helping insurers identify exposures and manage risks throughout the policy lifecycle.

Nettle has built a platform that turns Loss Control into a competitive advantage. The purpose has always been to prevent losses, but insurers can only act on the risks they understand. Too often, that understanding is limited by the capacity of their teams, and that’s the ceiling we’re removing.

Jack Miller, Nettle’s co-founder and CEO

“Our AI workspace gives insurers the tools to bring more of the portfolio into view, either through risk engineers, agents, or even policyholders. This round lets us take what we’ve proven across three continents, with extremely positive feedback, and scale it everywhere our customers operate.”

The platform has been developed for enterprise insurance environments, with support for cloud and on-premise deployment, regional data residency requirements and enterprise-grade security.

Nettle was founded by Miller and CTO Katya Kinane, former colleagues at QuantumBlack, McKinsey’s AI business. Both previously worked on developing and deploying AI products across insurance and financial services.

The founders’ experience in enterprise AI applications has informed Nettle’s approach to integrating automated risk assessments into existing insurance operations.

Kevin McLoughlin, Founder and Managing Partner at MTech, said the investment reflects the potential for generative AI to improve the collection and analysis of physical-risk information for large commercial insurance accounts.

“Using generative AI, top global insurers are adopting the Nettle platform, which requires minimal integration effort, to transform physical data collection and analyses for large commercial risks. We are very impressed with Nettle’s success to date and the deep experience the founders bring to an area of insurance often overlooked by start-ups.”

With operations in London and New York City, Nettle intends to build on its existing relationships with insurers across three continents.

Its next phase of development will focus on expanding geographic coverage and enabling insurers to collect risk information through a broader network of engineers, agents and policyholders. The company expects this approach to extend loss control assessments to more insured locations without requiring a corresponding increase in specialist engineering resources.
