Robinhood fund invests $75 mn in OpenAI to open private markets

Robinhood Ventures Fund I (RVI), a publicly traded closed-end investment fund created by Robinhood Markets, to give retail investors access to private-market opportunities, invested $75 mn into OpenAI through a purchase of common stock, marking one of the fund’s largest allocations since launch.

The transaction closed on April 17, 2026 and reflects a push to broaden access to private market opportunities.

Sarah Pinto said OpenAI represents a frontier company shaping future technology development. The investment fits the fund’s strategy of adding high-growth businesses to its portfolio while giving public market investors exposure to private assets.

The fund trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker RVI and operates as a listed closed-end structure. This setup allows investors with standard brokerage accounts to participate without accreditation requirements or high entry thresholds.

According to Beinsure analysts, this model attempts to bridge a long-standing access gap between retail investors and venture-backed companies.

Private markets have expanded significantly over the past two decades, while public listings have declined.

The number of listed companies in the United States dropped from around 7,000 in 2000 to slightly above 4,000. At the same time, private markets have grown to an estimated value exceeding $10 tn, with companies delaying public listings and raising capital privately for longer periods.

OpenAI joins a portfolio that already includes firms such as Stripe, Revolut, and Databricks. Adding an AI-focused company increases the fund’s exposure to a segment experiencing rapid investment and development.

The portfolio structure allows investors to access multiple technology verticals through a single listed vehicle.

The investment also follows earlier friction between the two organisations, when OpenAI clarified it did not support an unregulated token-based product linked to Robinhood.

The current transaction uses a regulated fund structure, providing a clearer framework for investor participation and strengthening alignment between both sides.

Robinhood Ventures Fund I continues positioning itself as a gateway for retail capital into private technology markets, where access has remained limited despite sustained growth.
