Wawanesa General Insurance has changed its name to W Insurance, introducing a new brand identity while maintaining its existing insurance operations, customer relationships and policyholder services in California.
The San Diego-based insurer, which is licensed to operate in California, serves more than 300,000 policies across personal insurance lines, including auto, homeowners, condo and renters coverage.
W Insurance sells policies directly to consumers, maintaining its direct-to-consumer distribution model and existing approach to pricing and customer service.
The rebranding does not involve changes to the company’s underlying operations or insurance products. W Insurance will continue serving its existing members under the new name, with the same employees, operating principles and service arrangements.
While our name has changed, who we are has not. Our mission is to serve our members, and that commitment continues to guide us every day
Chris Henn, President of W Insurance
“As W Insurance, we remain focused on supporting our members and the communities they call home, rooted in our values of putting people first, working as a team, and doing right by people. This change reflects a simpler name that modernizes our brand as we remain true to our values of service and dedication to protecting our members,” said Chris Henn.
W Insurance rebranding does not affect existing policyholders
The transition from Wawanesa General Insurance to W Insurance will not change existing insurance policies or require action from customers.
Coverage, premiums, policy terms, limits, account numbers, discounts and claims handling procedures will remain unchanged. Policyholders will continue working with the same service teams, and their insurance protection will remain uninterrupted as long as their policies stay active.
Existing proof of insurance documents and identification cards will remain valid until their expiration dates.
Customers will gradually encounter the W Insurance name and logo across company communications, policy documents and digital services. Updated branding will appear on new documents and policies as they are renewed.
The company confirmed that the change is limited to its brand identity. It does not constitute a transfer of policies to another insurance carrier and will not affect existing coverage, claims administration or policy servicing.
“The transition to W Insurance is seamless for our members,” Henn said. “Our teams, processes, and service commitment remain unchanged, and we are focused on ensuring a smooth transition. Members will continue to receive the same dependable service they expect, now under the W Insurance name.”
W Insurance continues its 130-year insurance heritage
W Insurance traces its history to The Wawanesa Mutual Insurance Company, established on September 25, 1896, as a farmers’ mutual insurance carrier in Wawanesa, Manitoba, Canada.
The company’s expansion into the United States began in 1975, when Wawanesa Mutual Insurance obtained a licence to sell automobile insurance in California under the Wawanesa General Insurance name.
Its US corporate office opened in San Diego in April of that year, establishing the company’s presence in the California personal insurance market.
Wawanesa General Insurance subsequently expanded beyond automobile coverage, adding homeowners, condo and renters insurance to its product portfolio.
In 2024, the company was acquired by an insurer affiliated with the Automobile Club of Southern California. The latest rebranding follows that ownership change and establishes W Insurance as the company’s operating identity.
W Insurance will retain its direct-to-consumer business model and continue providing personal insurance products to California residents. The company said its priorities remain customer service, insurance value and support for the communities in which its members live.
“This marks an important milestone for our company and the members we serve,” Henn said. “We’re proud of our history and service to our members as we focus on the future. As W Insurance, we will continue to build on our legacy, delivering trusted protection and value to our members and communities.”
