Insurtech Root launches behavior-based car insurance in New Jersey

Insurtech Roots launches AI claims accelerator for Guidewire ClaimCenter

Root expanded its mobile-first, behavior-based car insurance product into New Jersey, bringing the telematics insurer into its 37th US state.

The launch gives Root access to more than 6.6 mn eligible drivers in New Jersey and extends its reach to more than 80% of the US population. The company remains on track with its target of offering coverage across the contiguous US by 2027.

Insurtech Root, founded in 2015 and based in Columbus, Ohio, is the parent company of Root Insurance Company. The company uses data science and mobile technology to offer personalized auto insurance pricing. The Root app has recorded more than 17 mn downloads and analyzed more than 36 bn miles of driving data.

Root prices auto insurance mainly on driving behavior rather than traditional rating factors. Its mobile telematics system measures how people drive, including focused driving, smooth braking and gentle turns. Safer drivers in New Jersey get access to annual savings of up to $1,300, depending on test-drive results and selected coverage.

The company said the New Jersey launch expands consumer choice in a state where the auto insurance market has long been less open to newer digital carriers. Root handles onboarding, coverage selection, policy management and claims routing through its mobile app.

Alex Timm, founder and CEO of Root, called the New Jersey launch a major step in the company’s state expansion strategy. He said Root’s entry into the Garden State broadens its reach in a market with limited consumer choice and shows how its behavioral pricing model scales through technology.

For New Jersey drivers, the process starts with the Root app. Drivers sign up in minutes, then complete a test drive through smartphone sensors. The app measures real-time driving behavior and uses individual risk signals to inform pricing.

After the test drive, Root gives drivers a personalized quote. Safe driving habits receive lower rates, customized coverage options and digital policy management through the app.

Root said its behavior-based auto insurance is now available across New Jersey. Nationwide availability details sit at joinroot.com/availability.

The company bases New Jersey rates on driving performance metrics collected through data science and mobile technology. Focused driving, smoother braking and gentle turning all feed into the price calculation.

Safe drivers switching to Root in New Jersey get annual savings of up to $1,300, depending on their test-drive results and coverage choices. The savings figure comes from a survey of Root customers who bought new policies between February 2025 and February 2026 and reported savings. Changes in coverage levels were not evaluated.
