  • Liberty Mutual has introduced Liberty Biberty, a new insurance advertising character inspired by a viral line from its 2019 commercial.
  • Created with agency Bandits & Friends and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the character is Liberty Mutual’s first new brand mascot in eight years.
  • The campaign will run across television, streaming, social media and creator partnerships, complementing the existing LiMu Emu and Doug advertising characters.

Liberty Mutual Insurance has introduced Liberty Biberty, a new advertising mascot inspired by a memorable mistake in one of its earlier commercials, as the US insurer expands its character-led marketing strategy.

Announced on July 20, 2026, the character marks Liberty Mutual’s first addition to its advertising character lineup in eight years. The campaign builds on the popularity of a phrase that first appeared in a 2019 commercial featuring an actor who repeatedly struggled to pronounce the insurer’s name.

Rather than introducing an entirely unfamiliar character, Liberty Mutual is turning an established advertising reference into a recognizable brand identity designed to support its long-term marketing efforts.

Liberty Biberty was developed by Liberty Mutual and its creative agency Bandits & Friends, with the physical character created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

The fuzzy yellow mascot is intended to represent the positive feeling associated with obtaining comprehensive insurance protection at an affordable price.

The insurer plans to introduce the character across television, streaming platforms, social media, media integrations and collaborations with digital content creators.

The launch reflects Liberty Mutual’s continued investment in recognizable advertising characters to differentiate its insurance products in a competitive US market.

Liberty Biberty gives us a fresh way to show up in culture while staying true to what makes Liberty Mutual distinctive. We have long believed that memorable characters help people connect with our brand, and Liberty Biberty builds on that proven strategy in a way that feels timely, entertaining and unmistakably Liberty Mutual.

Jenna Lebel, Liberty Mutual’s chief marketing officer for US Retail Markets

The new mascot will complement rather than replace LiMu Emu and Doug, the insurer’s established advertising characters.

Liberty Mutual said the expanded lineup will provide additional opportunities to develop campaigns around different personalities while maintaining a consistent brand identity.

The approach also allows the company to extend an existing advertising reference into new formats and distribution channels instead of relying exclusively on traditional television commercials.

From advertising mistake to insurance mascot

The name Liberty Biberty originated in a 2019 advertisement featuring an actor who mistakenly says “Liberty Biberty” while attempting to deliver a commercial for Liberty Mutual.

The phrase subsequently became a recognizable part of the insurer’s advertising, creating an opportunity to develop a new character around an idea already familiar to audiences.

Nicholas Bauman, group creative director at Bandits & Friends, said the creative team identified the potential to turn the phrase into a standalone brand asset.

“Liberty Biberty was already hugely culturally relevant, and we saw this untapped potential as an opportunity for the brand to capitalize on,” Bauman said.

The agency’s approach was to give the phrase a visual identity connected to Liberty Mutual’s core insurance proposition.

The resulting character represents what the insurer describes as the feeling of receiving strong coverage and savings on car insurance.

By combining an established advertising reference with a distinctive physical mascot, Liberty Mutual aims to strengthen brand recognition across different consumer audiences.

The company has not disclosed the campaign’s advertising budget or specific commercial performance targets.

Liberty Mutual is a Fortune 100 insurance group with more than 40,000 employees operating across 27 countries and economies. The company reports annual consolidated revenue exceeding $50 bn and describes itself as the world’s ninth-largest property and casualty insurer.

The launch forms part of its broader strategy to build long-term consumer recognition through recurring advertising characters while reinforcing its insurance coverage and pricing message.
