MetLife launches ChatGPT plugin for pet insurance quotes and applications
  • MetLife Pet Insurance has launched a ChatGPT plugin that allows consumers to explore coverage options, complete applications and obtain personalized binding quotes through natural conversations.
  • MetLife says it is the first major pet insurer to support conversational insurance applications through ChatGPT, with final policy purchases completed on its website.
  • MetLife data shows that one-third of employees worry about pet care costs, while fewer than 10% have pet insurance and 70% of pet owners report delaying or skipping veterinary treatment because of expenses.

MetLife has integrated its pet insurance portal with ChatGPT, introducing a conversational application process that allows consumers to obtain personalized insurance quotes and apply for coverage through an AI-powered interface.

The integration enables pet owners to provide information about their animals, review available insurance options and receive binding quotes from MetLife Pet Insurance without navigating a conventional application form.

Customers can then connect directly to the MetLife Pet Insurance website to review the quote generated from their completed application and finalize the policy purchase.

MetLife said it is the first major pet insurance provider to support conversational application submissions through a ChatGPT plugin. The initiative expands its digital distribution capabilities as AI-powered platforms become another channel through which consumers research financial products and evaluate coverage.

We believe conversational experiences can make it easier for people to understand their options and take action when they’re ready. By bringing MetLife Pet Insurance to ChatGPT, we’re creating a simpler, more intuitive path to coverage for pet parents.

Todd Katz, head of Group Benefits at MetLife

“This is about using innovation to remove friction from an important financial decision,” said Todd Katz.

The launch comes as rising veterinary expenses place additional pressure on household budgets, increasing concerns about the affordability of medical treatment for pets.

According to MetLife data, one-third of employees are concerned about their ability to pay for pet care, although fewer than one in 10 have pet insurance.

The company also reported that seven in 10 pet owners have postponed or forgone veterinary treatment because of cost. More than one-third said their pet’s medical condition subsequently deteriorated.

These findings illustrate the financial pressures affecting pet owners and the potential consequences of delaying veterinary care.

Through the ChatGPT integration, MetLife aims to make insurance applications and coverage comparisons more accessible, allowing consumers to assess protection against unexpected veterinary expenses using a conversational interface.

The plugin supports the application and quotation stages, while the insurer’s website remains the destination for completing transactions.

For MetLife, the integration represents an additional distribution channel for pet insurance, connecting consumers who use ChatGPT with its existing insurance products and purchasing infrastructure. The company expects the conversational process to simplify access to coverage information and help customers make purchasing decisions based on their individual pet insurance needs.
