Munich Re Specialty has formally entered Australia’s primary specialty insurance market, establishing a Sydney-based operation focused on commercial insurance solutions for mid-market clients.

The business will initially target Property, Construction & Engineering, Mining, and Surety, with plans to expand its local underwriting, claims and distribution capabilities.

The Australian operation will also provide access to products offered through Munich Re Specialty’s Lloyd’s syndicate and the wider Munich Re Group. The company will continue investing in partnerships with managing general agents (MGAs) it backs in Australia.

The launch forms part of Munich Re Specialty’s international expansion strategy and supports Munich Re Group’s Ambition 2030 objectives. Its operating model places underwriting and claims specialists closer to brokers and clients, with local decision-making authority intended to improve responsiveness.

“Munich Re’s global financial strength, stability and technical prowess provides a powerful competitive advantage and a basis as a long-term partner for risk management. Complemented by my team of experienced underwriters and claims professionals, we will provide local authority with an easy to access, consistent and responsive approach. We have built client needs into our planning from the outset and for that reason, I have every confidence the market will appreciate our offering,” Mackinnon said.

Munich Re Specialty expands underwriting and claims operations

Munich Re Specialty has appointed three senior executives to support the Australian business and oversee its day-to-day operations.

Chris Harnett will serve as Head of Underwriting, Angus Kench as Head of Commercial Claims, and Alison Percival as Head of Partnerships.

The business will be headquartered in Sydney, where Munich Re already maintains corporate insurance and reinsurance operations.

The Australian launch adds to Munich Re Specialty’s existing regional presence, which includes offices in Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai.

The company plans to continue developing its local underwriting, claims management and distribution teams as it expands its primary specialty insurance operations in Australia.
