Hippo partners with Progressive to expand homeowners insurance reach

Insurtech Hippo appointed William Malone as Vice President & Head of Agency

Hippo Holdings entered a distribution deal with Progressive Insurance earlier this year, expanding its homeowners insurance reach across multiple US states.

Under an agreement with Progressive Advantage Agency, Progressive’s internal agency unit, Hippo products now appear within HomeQuote Explorer.

Customers access coverage online or through Progressive agents in Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.

Hippo taps into Progressive’s distribution network while offering bundled policy discounts to customers shopping within that ecosystem.

Rick McCathron, Hippo’s president and CEO, links the deal to shared priorities around technology and customer experience. He points to data-driven underwriting and personalization as central to the offering.

“Working with Progressive, Hippo can leverage data and technology to deliver more personalized coverage and a superior customer experience,” said Rick McCathron.

The partnership supports more tailored coverage structures and tighter alignment with customer risk profiles. We think this reads as a distribution play first, with underwriting discipline sitting right behind it.

The agreement builds on Hippo’s push to improve loss ratios through stricter underwriting controls. The company leans on data inputs to refine risk selection and pricing decisions.

Progressive contributes scale, brand reach, and a large existing customer base. That base fits Hippo’s underwriting appetite, which matters more than raw volume.

Azadeh Hardiman, GM of Acquisition Experience Strategy at Progressive, frames the move around customer experience. She emphasizes coverage selection and smoother transitions from quote to claim. The company positions the integration as a way to simplify how homeowners find and secure protection.

“Across our property carriers, we prioritize our customers’ needs, from personalized coverage selection to seamless experience from quote to claim,” said Azadeh Hardiman, GM, Acquisition Experience Strategy at Progressive.

According to Beinsure analysts, distribution partnerships like this tend to hinge on execution details, not announcements.

The collaboration reflects Hippo’s broader push toward portfolio diversification and controlled growth. The company continues to adjust underwriting strategy while expanding access through third-party channels.

Growth sits alongside tighter risk management, not separate from it.

Hippo operates as a technology-focused insurance group with exposure across personal and commercial lines. Its homeowners program combines underwriting data with industry experience to structure coverage around specific risk profiles.

Subsidiaries include Hippo Insurance Services, Spinnaker Insurance Company, Spinnaker Specialty Insurance Company, and Wingsail Insurance Company.

Hippo Insurance Services operates as a licensed property and casualty agent, distributing products underwritten by affiliated and external carriers.
