Insurtech Root launches driver-based auto insurance in Minnesota

Root Insurance, a low-code, API-first insurance technology provider, has expanded its auto insurance services to Minnesota, offering over 4 mn drivers a model based on driving behavior instead of traditional demographic factors. This move brings Root’s presence to 35 states, covering more than 77% of the U.S. population.

Root uses smartphone technology and data analysis to assess driving habits like focused driving, smooth braking, and gentle turning. This approach rewards safer drivers with personalized, affordable rates.

Drivers can sign up via the Root app or website. The process begins with a quick registration and a test-drive period where driving behavior is monitored to calculate rates.

The app also streamlines claims processing and offers flexible coverage options. Root partners with independent agents and tech-focused firms, providing multiple customer access points.

Root’s Co-Founder and CEO, Alex Timm, highlighted the company’s goal to offer fair pricing tailored to individual performance.

We’re excited to bring an easy, technology-driven car insurance option to Minnesota, offering drivers a new option for fair, affordable prices that reflect their individual driving habits. Minnesotans now have access to a smarter, more convenient insurance experience based on how they drive.

Root’s expansion aligns with its mission to deliver fair and transparent insurance, using technology to redefine traditional auto policies across the U.S.

In November 2024, Root has introduced its Certified Developer Community program. This initiative is designed to upskill in-house developers at insurance companies, enabling them to collaborate, share best practices, and drive innovation in insurance technology.

The program addresses the industry’s need to improve scalability, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness in insurance technology projects. By offering a structured onboarding and certification process, Root helps developers become certified Solutions Engineer freelancers.

These certified engineers gain access to freelance opportunities, project allocations, and a robust support system managed by Root’s Solutions Engineering team. The program also provides ongoing training, mentorship, and performance monitoring to ensure developers continue to grow their skills.

Root’s Certified Developer Community program underscores its commitment to delivering insurance technology projects faster and more efficiently. It also serves as a strategic move to expand Root’s ecosystem while providing insurance businesses with access to skilled talent capable of implementing scalable and cost-effective solutions.
