Zurich-based PERILS AG has extended its catastrophe loss reporting to include Severe Convective Storm (SCS) events in Europe, Japan, and New Zealand, effective 1 August 2025. This expansion adds to the company’s existing SCS data services for Australia and Canada.
The regions now covered in Europe include Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
Reporting will apply to industry losses exceeding €500mn in Europe, ¥100bn in Japan, and NZ$300mn in New Zealand. The scope includes both property and motor insurance lines.
PERILS released SCS exposure data for these markets in April 2025. Access is available through the company’s data platform.
Data collection follows the PERILS CORE framework. Insurers provide information at the CRESTA zone and line-of-business levels.

This structure enables use of the loss data in model validation, exposure analysis, and structuring industry-loss-based risk transfer products.
Commenting on the development, CEO Christoph Oehy stated that the inclusion of SCS in the CORE product responds to strong market demand and represents a strategic target achieved for 2025. He credited insurance partners for their ongoing cooperation and data contributions.
SCS risk continues to gain relevance globally. Reliable loss and exposure data remain essential for understanding the hazard.
Historically, this data was scarce and fragmented. Since 2009, PERILS has addressed this gap through a consistent methodology and direct engagement with insurers.
The expanded SCS dataset supports the market’s need for improved catastrophe modeling and risk quantification. It also enables the design of new risk transfer instruments using PERILS as the reference data provider.
