Zurich-based catastrophe data provider PERILS has launched a new forecasting platform that delivers real-time industry loss estimates for typhoons in Japan.
The system, branded Wind-Jeannie Japan, builds on the firm’s existing Jeannie suite for Europe and Australia, which has now also been updated with enhanced loss calculation engines.
Wind-Jeannie Japan models industry losses from typhoon events up to 72 hours in advance. Forecasts update automatically every 12 hours, incorporating wind gust projections from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, a source widely regarded for its cyclone prediction accuracy.
The platform generates footprints of expected wind gusts alongside potential insured losses, and allows users to download data at the municipality, or “Kushichōson,” level for their own analysis.
PERILS introduced the Jeannie platform in 2015 for European windstorms and later expanded it to cover Australian wind and hail events.
The tools have become a standard reference for insurers and reinsurers preparing for severe weather, offering immediate access to loss estimates and geographic impact assessments.

They are available around the clock via web and mobile devices, with optional email alerts for events expected to surpass pre-set loss thresholds.
As we enter the peak typhoon season, Wind-Jeannie Japan provides a welcome new perspective on typhoon risk in Japan. It enhances the ability to understand the potential impact of a typhoon ahead of an event and helps insurers prepare resources to respond quickly and effectively.

PERILS CEO Christoph Oehy described the Jeannie suite as designed to function much like weather forecasting apps.
“The information is instantly accessible and easy to understand, whether on a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. In our view, the Jeannie tools demonstrate the value of PERILS exposure and loss data, and the innovation it can drive,” he said.
The firm’s database, available through annual subscription, provides catastrophe exposure and event loss data across 18 countries including Japan, as well as industry exposure data for Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand.
The new typhoon module extends that coverage with a dedicated view of Japan’s tropical cyclone risk, reinforcing PERILS’ effort to deepen industry access to reliable catastrophe intelligence.
