FEMA announced federal funding for hazard mitigation projects in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia and West Virginia. The funding will support state and local work to reduce natural hazard risks before future disasters, according to Beinsure.
Congress authorised 15 projects in those states through the FY 2026 Homeland Security and Further Additional Continuing Appropriations Act. FEMA made the funding available through its Pre-Disaster Mitigation grant programme.
Across the US, 40 states and one Tribal Nation are expected to receive more than $189 mn in federal funding for 125 projects.
In FEMA Region 3, the Mid-Atlantic projects include flood control, stormwater management, dam rehabilitation, shoreline protection, drainage upgrades, landslide remediation and emergency operations centre improvements.
- Delaware will receive $1.5 mn for the City of Wilmington’s Lower Brandywine Flood Mitigation project and $758k for New Castle County’s Little Mill Creek Upper Reach Flood Control Project Major Maintenance.
- Maryland projects include $1.1 mn for Anne Arundel County’s Columbia Beach Resilience project, $1.1 mn for the City of Frederick’s West Patrick Street at Maryvale Ditch Flood Mitigation project and $1.1 mn for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources’ Holly Beach Farm Resiliency project.
- Maryland will also receive $1.1 mn for Montgomery County’s Wheaton Branch Flood Mitigation project and $226k for Anne Arundel County’s Historic Whitehall Shoreline project, according to Beinsure.
- Pennsylvania received the largest listed allocation in the region, with $5.2 mn for Lower Makefield Township’s Flood Mitigation and Stormwater Management project. Monroe County will receive $2.4 mn for the Goose Pond Dam Rehabilitation project.
- The Municipal Authority of the Town of Bloomsburg will receive $1.2 mn for its Wastewater Treatment Plant Flood Mitigation project. The Municipal Authority of the City of Sunbury will receive $1 mn for a flood mitigation project.
- Virginia projects include $1.7 mn for the City of Harrisonburg’s Suter Street Drainage Improvement project and $1.1 mn for the City of Portsmouth’s Gust Lane Flood Mitigation Improvements project.
- West Virginia will receive $3.2 mn for Beckley-Raleigh County Convention Center’s Emergency Operations Center HVAC Upgrades project and $488k for the Town of Burnsville’s Landslide Remediation project.
Communities must submit applications by 5 p.m. ET on July 22, 2026. FEMA will review applications and release funds after confirming applicants meet eligibility requirements.
