Insurtech Corgi expands trucking insurance program to towing businesses

Corgi, an AI-native insurance carrier serving specialized commercial risks, has expanded its trucking insurance program to include towing companies and tow-truck operators. The new offering combines several coverages designed around the risks created when towing businesses transport, handle or store customers’ vehicles.

Towing operations carry exposures that differ from those faced by traditional freight haulers. Tow trucks spend substantial time on public roads, but operators also assume responsibility for vehicles belonging to customers while those vehicles are being transported or kept in their care.

Corgi has structured the program around those exposures rather than treating towing as another conventional commercial trucking class. The policy combines Auto Liability, On-Hook Coverage and Garage Keepers coverage through one insurer and policy structure.

Auto Liability addresses third-party bodily injury and property damage arising from operation of the tow truck. On-Hook Coverage applies to customers’ vehicles while they are being towed, while Garage Keepers coverage addresses vehicles held at locations operated by the towing business.

Bringing those coverages together is intended to reduce the fragmented insurance structure that towing companies often encounter.

Operators have historically purchased separate policies or placed different exposures with multiple carriers, leaving businesses to manage separate terms and claims relationships.

Josh Shih, Head of Underwriting at Corgi, said towing requires a different underwriting approach because operators assume responsibility for property belonging to other people. The exposure continues beyond driving in cases where vehicles remain in the towing company’s custody.

Corgi designed the new product around that chain of responsibility. The structure gives towing businesses one insurance arrangement for road liability alongside damage involving vehicles being transported or stored.

The expansion builds on Corgi’s existing trucking insurance program, which serves commercial transportation companies and specialized trucking risks. Adding towing extends the program into an industry where vehicle custody creates insurance requirements beyond standard commercial auto liability.

Corgi also operates its own claims capabilities alongside proprietary underwriting technology and insurance infrastructure. Its broader model focuses on specialized commercial businesses where underwriting requires more detailed information about individual operations than standard small-business insurance products usually collect.

The towing launch adds another class to that strategy. Rather than adapting a general trucking policy with limited additional endorsements, Corgi has packaged the principal towing exposures into a program built specifically for operators transporting and holding third-party vehicles.

For towing companies, the practical difference lies in how several related losses sit within the insurance structure. A road accident involving the tow truck, damage to a vehicle currently on the hook and damage to a customer’s vehicle being stored represent separate exposures, even when they arise from the same business operation.

Corgi’s program places those risks under one insurance relationship, reducing the need to coordinate coverage across several providers.

The insurer is positioning the towing product as part of its wider expansion into specialized commercial transportation risks.
