Lemonade expanded into the French market in December 2020 by launching AI-powered renters insurance.

This move has significantly advanced its European operations, and the introduction of homeowners insurance across France marks a further step in its global expansion strategy.

Daniel Schreiber, Lemonade’s CEO and co-founder, noted, “The European market was our fastest growing segment last year”.

Transitioning from a single to a multi-line insurer signifies a new phase in our European venture, especially in partnership with BNP Paribas Cardif—a relationship that enriches our prospects.

This partnership has thrived, initially focusing on renters insurance and now extending to homeowners. BNP Paribas Cardif, with 50 years of experience in the French market, will distribute this fully digital home insurance, enhancing Lemonade’s offerings.

On top of the industry base insurance coverage, the policy also provides a suite of add-ons to provide full-scope coverage and flexibility, including:

  • School Insurance: extended coverage to children up to 18 years old, to provide coverage during school and extracurricular activities should an accident occur.
  • Legal Protection: helping customers in case of disputes with a third party for a wide range of day-to-day situations (property, retail, work-related, and online reputation).
  • Theft Outside the Home: providing protection should someone steal a customer’s belongings while on the go.

Lemonade is regulated by the Dutch Central Bank and operates in France under the European Freedom of Services regime, with its European headquarters in Amsterdam. Both BNP Paribas Cardif and Lemonade Insurance N.V cover its risks.
